Why your business disappears from searches at seven in the evening

Google filters local results by whether you are open. If your hours are missing or unconfirmed, you are invisible in the searches where people need you most.

A pipe lets go at half past six on a Tuesday. The homeowner does what everybody does now. They pick up their phone and search for a plumber.

Google shows them three businesses. You are not one of them, and it has nothing to do with how good you are or how long you have been in business. Your hours were not filled in, so Google could not tell whether you were open, so it did not put you in front of somebody who needed someone open right now.

You will never know that happened. They called somebody else and got their pipe fixed, and you had an ordinary quiet evening.

How the filter works

When somebody searches for a local business, Google factors in whether each one is open at that moment. On Maps there is an explicit "Open now" filter people tap. In ordinary search results it is quieter, but the effect is the same. Results get weighted toward businesses that can actually help right now.

This matters most in exactly the situations where a customer has the least patience. Evenings. Weekends. Holidays. The moments when somebody has a problem and no interest in leaving a voicemail.

If Google does not have confident hours for you, it cannot include you in that. Not because it is penalising you, but because it does not know the answer.

The three ways this goes wrong

No hours at all. Your listing shows an "Add hours" prompt where a schedule should be. Anyone looking at your profile sees a business that has not filled in the most basic piece of information there is.

Hours Google is not confident about. You will sometimes see a note saying hours might differ, or a prompt asking somebody to confirm them. This happens when the information is old, or when Google has conflicting signals from your website, your listing and other directories. Confidence matters as much as accuracy here.

Hours that are simply wrong. The most damaging version, because it actively sends people to a closed shop. You changed your Saturday hours two years ago and updated the sign on the door and nothing else.

Holidays are where most businesses get caught

Regular hours are the easy part. Special hours are where it falls apart, and in New Brunswick that comes up more than you would think.

New Brunswick Day in August. Remembrance Day, where retail rules are their own conversation. Family Day, Boxing Day, and the stretch between Christmas and New Year where every business does something slightly different.

Google has a specific field for special hours. If you set them in advance, your listing shows the right thing on the day and Google keeps trusting your hours. If you leave it, Google shows your normal hours on a day you are closed, and people arrive at a locked door.

Take fifteen minutes at the start of the year and enter every stat holiday for the next twelve months. It is the single highest return admin task available on a Google profile and almost nobody does it.

What we found looking at local businesses

We opened the Google listings of 44 independent businesses in Fredericton earlier this year across auto repair, dental, physio, plumbing, electrical, heating and roofing.

Several had no hours listed at all. One dental clinic showed an "Add hours" prompt where the schedule should have been, meaning patients genuinely could not tell when it was open without phoning. A plumbing business and an electrical contractor were the same. Another had hours Google had flagged as unconfirmed.

These were not new businesses. They were established operations with real reputations, invisible in evening and weekend searches for a reason nobody had ever told them about.

Fix yours in ten minutes

  1. Search your business name on Google and look at what it currently says.
  2. Open your Google Business Profile and go to the hours section.
  3. Set your regular hours, including any day you are closed. Marking a day closed is better than leaving it blank.
  4. Add special hours for every statutory holiday in the next twelve months.
  5. Check your website says the same thing. Conflicting information is one of the reasons Google loses confidence in the first place.

While you are in there, check the phone number and make sure the website link actually loads.

One more thing worth setting

If you are a service business without a storefront, a plumber or an electrician or a mobile mechanic, your hours still matter and so does your service area. Set the area you actually travel to. Listing the whole province when you work within thirty minutes of home does not help you, and it makes your listing less relevant for the people who are genuinely nearby.
